**US President changes name of Department of Defense to Department of War**
"It's an honor to sign this order. Frankly, I think it's a momentous decision," US President Donald Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on September 6.
President Donald Trump was at the White House with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to announce the decision. Trump said the three had been discussing the name change for months.
It is unclear whether the name change will need to go through Congress. But Donald Trump has allowed the Pentagon to start using titles like "Secretary of War" and "Department of War" in official correspondence and public communications, and the department could keep its old name.
Three Republicans, Rep. Greg Steube of Florida, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott, have introduced legislation to rename the Department of Defense the Department of War. “For the first 150 years of our military’s history, Americans defeated our enemies and protected our country under the Department of War,” Lee said in a statement.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order paving the way for Washington to designate countries around the world as “state sponsors of wrongful detention” to impose sanctions.
The US will target countries currently holding Americans wrongfully as well as those engaging in “hostage diplomacy,” including China, Iran and Afghanistan, senior administration officials said.
“Bottom line: Anyone who uses Americans as bargaining chips will pay a price. This administration is not only putting America first, it is putting Americans first,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
The penalties imposed on the countries would be similar to how the US designates foreign terrorist organizations. Measures include sanctions, export controls and bans on entry into the US for those deemed involved in the false imprisonments.
Under the new order, the US will notify a country after determining that there has been an unlawful detention, giving them a certain amount of time to take action before Washington begins imposing sanctions. If the case progresses, the US will lift the sanctions.
